Drug Addiction Vs. Alcoholism
Most addiction-alcoholism treatment professionals agree that there are substantially more similarities than differences when comparing drug addiction to alcoholism. There are many descriptive terms, such as; substance abuse, chemical dependency, alcoholism, drug abuse, addiction and so on… The fact of the matter is that while the chemical of choice may differ (alcohol, cocaine, marijuana, etc), the overall behavior is quite similar. Drug addicts and alcoholics are known for being prone to lying, deception, self-serving practices, manipulation and so on.
The predominant terms used to describe how the mind works in these individuals is “alcoholic or addict thinking.” It describes a type of thinking and general view of the world common among most individuals in this category, alcoholics and drug addicts alike. If you ever happen to attend a 12-Step recovery meeting – AA, NA, or CA specifically – and have a chance to hear the speaker’s pitch, you will quite likely hear descriptions of how he or she never quite fit it. No matter how many friends they had, no matter how happy they may have appeared on the surface, the reality is that they were never comfortable in their own skin and just couldn’t wait to get away or escape from wherever they were or whatever they were doing.
Here’s the truth of the matter… For people whom are stricken with the true addict or alcoholic mind, drugs and alcohol are not the problem; in fact, they are the solution! We’re not talking about the heavy user or heavy drinker. We’re not referring to the guy who got a couple of DUI’s due to sheer stupidity but outside of that can go weeks or months without even thinking of taking a drink. We’re talking about the true, hardcore drug and/or alcohol user whom is stricken with the daily need to escape from his or her miserable, monotonous, boring, pitiful, incomprehensible existence. The person who has no other choice but to use drugs or alcohol as a means to escape from the emotional hell between their ears. For those out there having no experience with true drug addiction or alcoholism don’t waste your time trying to understand; but for those who do, well, you know what it’s like…
So what is the difference between drug addiction and alcoholism? Very little to be quite honest. Aside from the poison of choice, the behaviors and actions of the sufferer are very similar. It’s also important to understand the distinctions between casual users, heavy users, those who binge and then of course, the true addict or alcoholic. The person we’re referring to up above is the latter, the true addict or alcoholic. With regards to the others, there are infinite variations…
