Florida Sober Living Homes and 3/4 Halfway Houses

The State of Florida is easily among the most populated regions, not only nationwide, but worldwide, when it comes to addiction-alcoholism-mental health recovery services of all types including; sober living homes, halfway houses, 3/4 houses and other transitional living residences.  Interestingly however, Southern Florida tends to offer many more options than the Northern portion of the state.  The major cities and regions consist of: Miami, Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach County, Delray Beach, Hollywood, Tampa Bay, St. Petersburg, Jacksonville, Port St. Lucie, Cape Coral, Boca Raton, Hialeah and many others.  Florida also has a huge variation of sober living homes and other transitional-type residences for people of all socioeconomic levels, stemming from affordable, low-cost options on up to high-end, luxury & executive types.

There are very few regions throughout the world that compare to Florida with regard to addiction recovery services.  This extends far beyond sober living homes and halfway 3/4 houses and includes treatment centers, drug rehabs, clinics, therapists, psychologists & psychiatrists, sober coaches, interventionists and more.  As a matter of fact, over recent years there has been a growing popularity of a specific sober living residence style called "The Florida Model."  The Florida Model, as opposed to low-cost affordable sober living homes, typically consists of higher-end luxury and/or executive style and highly structured sober housing that is basically designed to act as an affordable alternative to traditional high priced residential drug rehab treatment.  These residence offer a whole slew of additional clinical services that are networked off the premises since sober living homes are not allowed to provide clinical services on site.  Such added recovery options usually consist of; intensive and/or partial outpatient treatment, private therapy, counseling, sober coaching, life coaching, holistic services (yoga, personal training, etc.) and so on.  Florida Model Sober Livings are rarely less than 4 or 5 thousand dollars per month and can be as much as 10 thousand per month or more.  Moreover you will only find such facilities in areas of high socioeconomic populations.

Florida Sober Living Halfway House Reviewskeep in mind that the terms describing these transitional residences vary from state to state and region to region.  California and the West Coast in general tend to to favor the term "sober living" while central and eastern parts of the country are more inclined to use terms like "halfway or 3/4 housing.":  Florida actually tends to be more of a hybrid, in that, all of the above descriptive terms are quite common and widely recognized among treatment & recovery professionals.  Be sure to ask some pertinent questions prior to deciding on a location…remember, recovery is a life-long process that demands commitment to a new way of life.  Some examples of pertinent question would be:

  • How structured is the sober living residence? For instance, are there any mandatory in-house meetings, curfews, sponsorship requirements, overnight absence restrictions, etc?
  • Is 12-Step meeting attendance required, and if so then how many per week?
  • What does the monthly cost include?
  • What types of recovery support groups are in the immediate vicinity?
  • Is the house male, female or coed?
  • How does the physical location work for you in terms of proximity to your job, job search, school, family, social and/or public services, etc?

COMMENTS:

I'VE BEEN HOMELESS FOR 4 MONTH, DUE TO MY STRONGER DESIRE TO DRINK, THEN TO SIMPLY PAY BILLS. OFCOURSE IT CAUGHT WITH ME. I WAS AT A NON STRUCTURED HOMELESS SHELTER. SURROUNDED BY DRUNKS AND ADDICTS, JUST LIKE ME, BUT NO ONE REALLY CONCERNED ABOUT RECOVERY. CITY HOUSE WAS THE FIRST SOBER HOUSE I FOUND (SOBER LIVING). THAT JUST SOUNDED GOOD TO ME. SO I CALLED, THE MAN SAID COME TALK TO ME, ASK FOR JOE. SO I DID. I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN ABOUT THE CITY HOUSE EARLIER. IM NOW AROUND PEOPLE THAT SPEAK A DIFFERENT LANGUAGE. IF THAT MAKES ANY SENSE. TO ME IT DOES. I'VE NOT EVEN THOUGHT ABOUT DRINKING. IT'S AMAZING . PEOPLE PLACES AND THINGS. SO TRUE. THANKS, PATRICK.

COMMENTS:

When leaving inpatient treatment, I asked God to lead me in the next part of my journey in recovery. Butterfly House was truly a gift from God. Being over 50 years old when I got sober, I was very reluctant about going to a half way house or transitional living. I felt I was too old and that it would not benefit me. Today, I am so grateful that I found a little bit of willingness to take suggestions. Upon arriving at Butterfly House, I immediately felt a great deal of love and acceptance from both the staff and other residents. Prior to coming into treatment, my life was very unstructured and I was always going a thousand miles a minute. Butterfly House provided me with enough structure to keep me safe from my worst enemy, myself. During my stay I learned about spirituality, prayer, going to meetings, the importance of a sober support network and how to have fun. There is something magical about Butterfly House and I am honored to have had the opportunity to experience it.

COMMENTS:

My experience with Grace Bay Residence is such that they truly care and provide a one-of-a-kind recovery environment for their residents.  This is a high-end, structured sober living that is literally able to provide the type of services that would make it be an affordable alternative to residential rehab. It is quite lavish and luxurious yet very proactive and rich in addiction recovery components.
