Sober Living Homes and Transitional Halfway 3/4 Housing in New York
New York City • Buffalo • Long Island • Upstate • Manhattan • Queens • Staten Island • Bronx • Rochester
The State of New York provides variations of sober living home option often termed; transitional housing, 3/4 homes and halfway houses. The actual phrase “sober living home” seems to be much more prevalent in other regions around the country. New York’s regions are largely broken into the 5 boroughs, those being, Staten Island, Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and Brooklyn, NY. Other portions of the state are broken up into regions and cities like, Buffalo, Upstate NY, Long Island, Albany, Rochester, etc.
In general, as compared on a state-by-state basis, New York is quite progressive in providing very affordable sober living housing & recovery options for addicts and alcoholics without the financial means available. As a matter of fact, a prime component of the halfway house model is that it enables the residents to transition from an inpatient-type status to a point of being able to resume working in order to save money for their inevitable departure. For those seeking more freedom & flexibility, the objective for you would likely be more along the lines of less structured sober living or 3/4 housing.
There are a variety of very important questions to consider prior to deciding on a particular sober living residence. Whether you’re seeking an affordable, mid-range or a luxury transitional housing location, it’s important to understand that health insurance companies do not pay for for these types of recovery services. In addition, here are a few other suggested questions to consider asking prior to making a decision:
- How structured is the sober living residence? For instance, are there any mandatory in-house meetings, curfews, sponsorship requirements, overnight absence restrictions, etc?
- Is 12-Step meeting attendance required, and if so then how many per week?
- What does the monthly cost include?
- What types of recovery support groups are in the immediate vicinity?

I’ve been at Harrison House almost 7 years and it’s been a life savor . I got a lot of my goals accomplished…got my driver license and am on my 4th car. I completed outpatient treatment and aftercare I am now a mentor to others! It’s a great place to live, and today I even have a bank account. I have nothing but good things to say about Kevin and Tonia (owners of Harrison House), they’re great people who always go out of there way to help…wish i met them earlier in my addiction 🙂
