If you read the tabloids or watch those evening Hollywood entertainment shows you’ll often hear stories on actors and actresses utilizing the services of what are commonly referred to as “glorified babysitters” or “sober coaches.”  These are basically individuals who work privately with the newly recovering addict/alcoholic on a variety of issues.  This segment within the professional recovery services industry is less defined than, for instance, therapy or counseling.  There are many grey areas as to what a sober coach’s duties and responsibilities should and should not be…this is an ever-evolving facet within the field of addiction recovery.

Information on Sober Coaches and Recovery Guides

The terms used can vary from region to region and service to service – sober coaches, recovery coaching, sober companion, life coach, travel companion and so on…  There are endless scenarios as to why a sober coach might be a good fit for someone.  On the surface it may seem that sober coaches or recovery companions are suited more for those in the public eye, e.i., actors, actresses, professionals athletes, etc.  Given the inherent issues of privacy such individuals face there’s definitely an advantage in that regard.  There are many other benefits to having the services of a sober coach, some examples would be; help & guidance in merging real life issues within the elements of recovery, gaining more insight and education on addiction/alcoholism, having a sober escort present in potentially slippery situations, assistance in overcoming potential obstacles, general life guidance, etc.

One of the biggest issues within the world of sober coaching and life coaching is the fact that many individuals working within this field are unqualified to do so.  Here is a common scenario: With so many employers now running instant background checks on applicants it is becoming more and more difficult for recovering drug addicts to re-enter the corporate world in traditional employment – it’s no surprise obviously, that addicts and alcoholics often times have blotches on their criminal backgrounds.  Hence,it is all too common that one will get a year or two sober under their belt and start their own sober coaching, life coaching or some other type of recovery guidance/companion service.  The world of addiction and treatment is very foreign to many and requires hands-on experience from the perspective of most, but there’s much more to it!

Finding the right sober coach to meet the client’s specific needs is a very important process.  There are many, many variations and many, many scenarios which can greatly alter the course of which direction you ultimately decide to go.  We encourage you to speak with coaching services and ask many questions.  Here are a few suggested starter questions you may want to ask:

  • Are you yourself in recovery?  If so, how much time do you have clean & sober and what did you get clean & sober from?  If they have anything less that 2 or 3 years sober we would definitely suggest moving on
  • What type of professional experience do you have?  What type of hands-on experience do you have?
  • What types of clients have you worked with (i.e., alcoholics, drug addicts, bulimics, anorexics, etc)?  Most licensed and experienced treatment professionals agree that men should work with men and women should work with women
  • Do you have any references and previous clients that we may speak with?
  • What is your standard protocol in the event a client relapses while in your care?
  • Are you insured and/or bonded?
  • What are your rates?

The suggested questions above are merely a starting point and we recommend speaking with a variety of companies before ultimately deciding on one…
